How to Build a Meal That Works Harder for You

Here’s something I want you to start thinking about differently about food and your health…

The health effect of a meal isn’t determined by one food. It’s determined by the combination.

This is one of the cleverest things about nutrition and one of the reasons I don't believe healthy eating needs to mean eating less, counting calories or cutting out the foods you love.

The way you combine foods can influence how satisfying a meal is, how quickly its carbohydrates are absorbed, how steady your energy feels afterwards and how well you meet your nutritional needs.

As we move through our 40s and 50s, this becomes particularly important.

Think: PROTEIN + PLANTS + FIBRE + GOOD FATS

Rather than having a piece of toast for breakfast, think:

Sourdough + eggs or roasted chickpeas + avocado + rocket. A sprinkle of feta and fresh herbs and you’ve got yourself a gourmet café breakfast homemade.

You've transformed the meal.

The protein from the eggs / chickpeas, fibre and plants from the rocket and the healthy fats from the avocado work together to create a more satisfying, nutrient-dense breakfast that impact your hormones which impacts your energy which impacts your entire day!

Or take fruit.

Fruit on its own is nutritious, absolutely. But pairing berries with Greek yoghurt, chia seeds and a few nuts gives you protein, fibre and healthy fats alongside the natural carbohydrates.

That changes the meal from simply something sweet into something far more sustaining and satisfying.

And here's where it gets really interesting…

The same principle applies to carbohydrates.

You don't necessarily need to remove potatoes, sweet potatoes, rice or grains to manage your weight. Don’t forget we need carbs to let protein into our muscles and let our brain think.

Instead, think about what you put alongside them.

A plate of pasta on its own is very different from:

Pasta + chicken + broccoli + rocket + extra virgin olive oil

Now you're bringing together protein, fibre, vegetables, healthy fats and carbohydrates for sustained energy power.

Again, it's a completely different way of thinking about food.

We're not taking food away. We're adding the right things in.

And that matters because when your meals are genuinely nourishing and satisfying, you're less likely to find yourself battling the 3pm slump, constant snacking, intense, sweet cravings or feeling ravenous at night which unfortunately all leads to a not so good nights sleep. And sleep is king remember!

What about hormones and weight?

Food doesn't magically “balance your hormones” but your everyday eating patterns can provide the nutrients and metabolic support your body needs while your hormones are changing.

·      Adequate protein helps support muscle.

·      Fibre supports gut health and helps with fullness.

·      Healthy fats provide essential fatty acids.

·      Colourful vegetables provide a huge range of protective plant compounds for immune health.

·      And combining carbohydrates with protein, fibre and fats can help create a more balanced meal.

This is the kind of nutrition I want you to understand as you get older.

Not “What can I cut out?”

But:

“How can I build this meal so it works harder for my body?”

That shift is powerful.

Because sustainable weight management isn't about eating perfectly.

It's about becoming really good at creating meals that support your energy, nourish your body and keep you satisfied.

And this is a big part of what I teach inside Nourish & Balance.

I don't just give you a list of foods you're “allowed” to eat.

I teach you how to put food together intelligently with meal plans so you can walk into your own kitchen, open the fridge and know how to create a meal that supports the human you are now.

Because your body doesn't need another diet.

It needs nourishment, consistency and the right combination of foods.
